Restores the Ability to Bite and Chew

Fractured teeth and severe cavities can make eating some foods difficult. By capping a damaged tooth with a crown, you should be able to eat your favorite foods and enjoy meals just like you used to.

Prevents Further Tooth Damage

Chips, cracks, and decay weaken a tooth's structure. Without treatment, root canal infections and further damage are possible. Getting dental caps can prevent these and other oral health problems.

Avoids the Need for Tooth Extraction

Given the dangers of structurally weakened teeth, extraction may be needed to prevent further wellness issues. Dental crowns help patients keep their natural teeth, which is better for their health.

Improves the Look of Your Smile

If a damaged front tooth needs capping, we can use a porcelain crown. This tooth-colored cap is carefully matched with the rest of your teeth. That means seamless, aesthetically pleasing results.

Why Dental Crowns Are Essential  for Treating Decay, Fractures, and More

Dental crowns are a crucial part of different restorative dentistry procedures. This includes general health needs and complex full mouth reconstructions. A dentist can use crowns in a number of ways to enhance a patient's dental health.

Advanced Restorative Care

Dental crowns are very versatile. We can use them to treat a serious tooth fracture or address severe decay on multiple teeth. Dentists use metal and porcelain crowns for all sorts of issues. Crowns are a reliable restorative treatment, putting an emphasis on the immediate needs of a patient as well as long-term results.

Root Canal Therapy

If you do need to undergo endodontic care, crowns will prove essential for finishing the job. During root canal therapy, a porcelain or metal dental crown will be used to cap the treated tooth. This will allow patients to bite and chew again. The crown also protects the tooth from future structural problems down the road.

Dental Implant Restoration

When a patient is missing just one tooth, a crown can be used to cap a dental implant for individual tooth replacement. Dental implants are artificial roots that are surgically anchored into the jawbone, preventing bone loss and gum recession. Porcelain crowns mean the treatment will not only be healthier than a traditional bridge but also look flawless.

Porcelain and Metal Crowns  Which Kind Should I Get?

There are two basic kinds of dental crowns: porcelain and metal. Both are effective in their own way, but each type has its own unique advantages. We can discuss if a metal crown, an all-ceramic crown, or another type of restoration would be ideal at our Southlake office. A customized treatment plan is essential.

Tooth-Colored Porcelain Crowns

A crown crafted from porcelain is designed to blend in imperceptibly with your surrounding teeth. This has numerous cosmetic benefits. Thanks to modern materials and techniques, a ceramic crown appears totally natural. It is common for these kinds of crowns to be used for the front teeth given how prominent they are in your smile. What they might lack in sheer durability, they more than make up for in looks.

Metal Dental Crowns

Metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are stronger than their porcelain counterparts. This is why they tend to be used as a dental restoration for the molars and premolars. Discomfort while chewing will no longer be an issue, even with your favorite tough and crunchy foods. While metal crowns may not be as aesthetically appealing as porcelain ones, their durability is a much more important consideration.

The Dental Crown Procedure  A Step-by-Step Guide

The dental crown procedure is relatively straightforward. You will need at least two dentist appointments to complete the treatment process, including follow-up visits to ensure the procedure was successful.
Dental crowns will cap, protect, and strengthen seriously damaged teeth.
Dental crowns will cap, protect, and strengthen seriously damaged teeth.

The Consultation

Your dentist will check your teeth and gum tissue to determine if you are a good candidate. It's important that you have enough healthy tooth structure.

Prepping Teeth

Your dentist will prep the damaged tooth or teeth. This involves the removal of weak tooth enamel so that only the healthy structure gets capped.

Taking Impressions

An impression is taken of the prepped tooth or teeth. This information will be used to fabricate the custom dental restoration at our on-site lab. In some cases, we might recommend your restoration is created at an off-site dental lab.

Temporary Crown

Patients will have a temporary crown placed. The temporary crown helps reduce discomfort while waiting for the permanent restoration.

Custom Fabrication

Skilled lab technicians will use the impressions provided by the dentist to create a custom crown. Crafting the final restoration can take up to two weeks.

Checking the Fit

Once the crown is completed, we can schedule your second appointment. Your dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the permanent one for fit and appearance.

Final Bonding

If you and your dentist are happy with the look and feel, the permanent crown will be attached. Though you may experience some slight sensitivity in the following days, the capped tooth will provide an immediate improvement.
